Performance 7+

“Godos” is an ongoing project by Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura”, which premiered in 2016 in collaboration with Norwegian choreographers Anne Ekenes and Pia Holden (the Panta Rei Theatre, Norway). For the Norwegian creators, the starting point was godos, interpreted as a “song of the heart”, while the inspiration for the Lithuanian part of the work, directed by the artistic director of Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura”, and laureate of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts, Birutė Letukaitė, was a primal past and its reflections in contemporary human beings. The word godos is rarely heard in everyday language today, yet it encompasses each of our experiences, memories, and emotions.

In the first part of the event, audiences will have a unique opportunity to see the legendary contemporary dance performance “Godos 2.0” by Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura”. In this newly reconstructed production, Aura’s dance company invites the viewer into a visionary world imbued with archetypes of the past, where feminine sensitivity unfolds alongside mysterious mythological beings, a primal past, and its reflections in today’s human being.

The second part of the event features the premiere of a new instalment of the cycle, “Godos 3.0”. It depicts a near future in which, despite the blurring of genders, previous differences and emotions resurface. Here, visions of a futuristic world intertwine with present-day realities: the search for the self and identity, loneliness, and the need to belong to a group. Futuristic people become increasingly similar to one another.

About The Director

Birutė Letukaitė, founder, artistic director, and choreographer of the Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura,” has been active in the field for over 40 years. Through her leadership at “Aura,” Letukaitė has shaped the identity of contemporary dance in Lithuania and mentored many professional dancers who have gone on to contribute to the global dance scene.

Over the past decade, the choreographer has actively engaged in both Lithuanian and international artistic and cultural initiatives, contributing significantly to their development. She has devoted herself to cultivating dance culture and nurturing younger generations. She has given lectures, published articles, and participated in television and radio programmes, as well as public discussions on culture.

A key focus of Letukaitė’s work is socially and educationally oriented programmes for dance enthusiasts and professionals. She was the first in Lithuania to stage performances with seniors and individuals with motor, visual, physical or mental impairments. She invited pupils, musicians, and artists from other fields to participate in her projects.

In 1989, at Letukaitė’s initiative, the first modern dance festival in Lithuania was held in Kaunas, which was renamed the International Dance Festival AURA in 2011 and has been organised for many years by the Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura” under her leadership. In 2013, she launched the educational platform “Aura+” at the theatre and created “On Aura’s Trampoline,” a platform supporting emerging choreographers. She continues to generously share her expertise through dance classes for children and adults offered by the “Aura” Theatre.

Letukaitė regularly participates in and draws inspiration from various dance seminars, presentations, international events, and fairs. She is actively involved in cultural activities beyond the theatre: Letukaitė became an ambassador for Kaunas European Capital of Culture (KEKS). In 2016, she collaborated internationally with Norway’s Panta Rei Theatre, resulting in the production “GODOS”, which achieved remarkable success and was presented in thirteen countries worldwide. Over the years, performances created by Letukaitė in collaboration with the Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura” have toured extensively abroad.
