“Ode to Light” is a synthesis of sacred music, dance and visual arts, combining the dynamics of dance, the theme of an inner journey, and the symbolic motif of lighthouses. For this performance, artistic forces are united by the “Golden Stage Cross” laureate Agnija Šeiko Dance Company and the Klaipėda Concert Hall’s artistic collectives: the chamber orchestra under the direction of Mindaugas Bačkus and the “Aukuras” Choir under the direction of Tomas Ambrozaitis.

The dancers, according to choreographer Agnija Šeiko, embody “inner ships”, while the character of the Ferryman leads through the metaphorical “sea of inner death”. It is a journey in which the light of the lighthouse becomes hope, and dance becomes a tool for personal transformation. During the performance, the dancers’ costumes, reminiscent of the sails of a sailing ship, transform to symbolise liberation and the discovery of light.

The musical programme includes world-renowned works such as Philip Glass’s Quartet No. 3 “Mishima”, excerpts from Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass”, Max Richter’s “November” and the Lithuanian folk song “Leliumoj, oi kas vaikščiojo”. The Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra and the “Aukuras” Choir create a unique sound space, and each performance is filled with inspiration and professionalism. This interdisciplinary project combines history, art and spirituality.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Agnija Šeiko studied dance at Klaipėda University, Rotterdam Dance Academy “Codarts”, currently she is the artistic director of the Šeiko Dance Theatre, choreographer, dancer and dance professor.

Throughout her career, A. Šeiko has been nominated for and received numerous regional and national awards. In recent years alone, she has been awarded such important prizes as the “Boris Dauguvietis Earring” in 2016, the “Golden Stage Cross” in 2018, the Vita Mozūraitė Prize in 2019, the Government Prize for Culture and Art in 2020, and the honorary title of Klaipėda Master of Culture in 2021. In 2022, she was awarded the “Golden Stage Cross” for the choreography of the dance performance “Indigo. Das Schliemann Projekt”.

Agnija’s creative works are distinguished by their interdisciplinarity, recognisable aesthetics, sensitive social themes, and diversity of forms. Live music, sculptural installations, and video projections are often incorporated into her performances. The choreographer’s work consistently surprises with new forms, contexts, and directions of exploration.

In addition to the genre of dance performance, Šeiko’s works also include dance operas, performances, and interdisciplinary projects that combine dance, music, and technology. Dance and cello music performances, as well as dance performances – excursions, have already become a calling card of Klaipėda culture.
